What happens to my vault when I die
Your vault is not opened by a timer, an algorithm, or anyone's say-so. Here is the whole process.
Someone has to tell us, and they have to be someone you named.
The people you nominate can tell us you have died. They are asked for the date, and for a document — a death certificate, a coroner's interim certificate, or a solicitor's letter.
A person reads it. Every time.
Someone here checks the document against the name on the account and the dates against each other, and records what they found. No part of that is automatic.
If we accept it, we tell you straight away — and you can stop it with one click.
The email goes to the address on your account. Stopping takes one click, needs no password, and the link never expires.
Your passwords and online accounts wait a further 14 days — the time you would need to say we had got it wrong — unless someone asks us to open them sooner and we agree, which is recorded.
Everything else opens when we accept the declaration.
Everyone who is granted access proves who they are.
Photo ID and a selfie, checked by our identity provider, before anything is visible.
They see only what you chose for them.
Access ends after twelve months.
We tell them thirty days before, and they can ask for longer.
